After my seclusion in a mental institution from the holidays after having to deal with Christmas Music Stations I’m back to write about something I just heard about. Normally I’d like to write more about phone and tablet apps but by the time I feel I get around to hearing about them they’ve been out for a year already. Personally I don’t download a lot of them, despite all the comings and goings with things like Voxor, Tango and any other voice/video messaging apps I’ve always managed to stick by what’s worked and what’s stayed consistent. That being whatsapp. Today however I downloaded the Snapshot App to see what all the fun/controversy was about.
My Snapchat App Impression
I just got it and tried it. Perhaps because I haven’t had ample time to “play” around with it maybe I don’t appreciate it as much as some but my first impression is it seems to do exactly what everyone is complaining about, sexting. We’re all aware of it, a lot of readers have probably done it too. If you’re using it for legit purposes maybe you can help me out by explaining to me what fun there is in this app?
What is the old saying, a picture lasts a lifetime?. Well I suppose I see the ingenious in snapchat in that regards, I mean after all we’ve heard about how many accounts of famous people getting busted for sexting and ending half naked (or full naked) pics to other people. If you haven’t here are just a few links to name a few: Metta World Peace, Tony Parker (who married Eva Longoria), Tiger Woods (incase you forgot), Brett Favre (True or not), etc.
But let’s not kid ourselves, anyone who is the least bit tech savvy will know how to save a screenshot from there phone. While you may have set your picture to disappear after 8 seconds on the snapchat app nerds like me will be able to save a phone screenshot and then proceed to ridicule you by sharing with friends. Granted there are a lot of people who just dont give a damn if there privates are out there for the world to see, to those people I salute.
Aside from the sexting philosophy
Stating the obvious concerns with Snapchat I’ll leave that as is and talk about why I don’t get it. I’ve ran Hotstickybun for close to 10 years now and a big part of that used to be displaying a large amount of photos (3000 to be approx) to anyone who visited the site. It was arguably the most visited thing on the site until I discovered I actually enjoyed writing blogs. It begs the question though, (sexting pics aside) don’t you want to keep good photos?
I don’t get it and I’m still trying to understand why you would not want to see a picture that made you laugh for longer then 8 seconds? Have we become so much more evolved (or lazy) that instead of the traditional sad face emoticon (
)we simply click a button to take a picture of our actual face to showcase our current emotion and send it to someone?
Help Me Understand the Snapchat Application
As mentioned maybe I haven’t used the Snapchat App enough to fully appreciate it’s function. From personal experience being able to send pics/videos through WhatsApp has been more then sufficient considering I can then show my other friends that same exact picture. If you’re wanting to hide something (like your privates) I can understand even though it’s not fool proof thanks to most phones ability to take screen shots but what other reason is there for this app? I suppose it would save one time from having to delete pointless pictures from there phone but are we that bored we send so many pointless pictures in the first place? Who knows, truthfully it seems a little goofy to me but having over a million users and boasting 30 million messages a day…they must be doing something right.
Thoughts?
